Dua After Salah

Dua After Salah

Prayer is not just an obligation—it is a meeting with Allah and a means of purifying the heart. In my experience, the moments spent sincerely connecting with Allah after completing the obligatory prayer bring a peace that words cannot describe. The prescribed and general supplications after prayer not only calm the heart but open a new door to closeness with Allah. These short yet powerful words contain gratitude, repentance, love, plea, and hope. Sadly, in our haste today, we often miss out on these precious moments. In this blog, I’ve tried to compile the Sunnah supplications and spiritual phrases traditionally recited after prayer—practices that can help deepen our bond with Allah.

Reciting Surah Aal-e-Imran on Friday:

Imam Mak’hool (رحمه الله) said that whoever recites Surah Aal-e-Imran on Friday, the angels continue to pray for him until nightfall.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf as it was revealed (with proper recitation), and then encounters the Dajjal, he will not be overpowered by him.”

(Sunan al-Nasa’i, Hadith 10790 – Sahih)

The Seven Saving Surahs

The pious elders referred to seven specific Surahs as “Manjiyat”—those that bring salvation:

Alif Lam Meem As-Sajdah, Yaseen, Ad-Dukhan, Al-Waqi’ah, Al-Mulk, Ad-Dahr, Al-Burooj.

Our righteous predecessors regularly recited five Surahs after daily prayers and advised others to do the same:

  • After Fajr: Surah Yaseen
  • After Dhuhr: Surah Al-Fath
  • After Asr: Surah An-Naba
  • After Maghrib: Surah Al-Waqi’ah
  • After Isha: Surah Al-Mulk

Some elders also said that whoever recites Surah An-Naba five times after Asr becomes known among the angels as “Asirullah” (the captive of Allah), and this practice is included in Asrar al-Awliya (The Secrets of the Saints).

Dua When Leaving Home for Prayer

Hazrat Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (RA) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Whoever recites the following supplication while leaving home for prayer:

“O Allah, I ask You by the right that those who ask have over You, and by the blessing of my walking towards You. You know that I have not come out with pride, arrogance, showing off, or seeking fame, but only to avoid Your displeasure and to seek Your pleasure. I ask You to protect me from Hell through Your mercy and to forgive my sins, for none can forgive sins except You.”

—then Allah turns His merciful gaze upon that person, and 70,000 angels pray for his forgiveness until he finishes his prayer.

(Kanz al-Ummal, Vol. 1, p. 215 | al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib)

Dua After Fajr and Asr Prayer

Hazrat Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (RA) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Whoever recites the following ten times after Fajr prayer, before speaking to anyone:

لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ، بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ، وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

(There is no god but Allah, He is One, He has no partner. His is the dominion and all praise. He gives life and causes death. In His Hand is all good, and He has power over everything.)

—Allah will:

  • Write ten good deeds for him,
  • Erase ten sins,
  • Raise him by ten ranks,
  • Protect him from all harms and from Satan throughout the day,
  • And no sin will harm him that day except shirk.

He will also receive the reward of freeing ten slaves.

Imam al-Nasa’i adds that each utterance earns the reward of freeing a believing slave. The same reward applies to reciting it after Asr, lasting through the night.

In another narration (Nasa’i and Tirmidhi from ‘Amarah ibn Shabeeb), it is stated:

Through these words, Allah writes ten deeds that guarantee Paradise, erases ten destructive sins, and grants the reward of freeing ten believing slaves.

Sins Forgiven Equal to the Foam of the Sea

Hazrat Anas (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Whoever recites the following supplication three times before Fajr prayer on Friday:

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ الَّذِي لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

(I seek forgiveness from Allah, besides whom there is no god, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I turn to Him in repentance.)

Allah will forgive all his sins, even if they are as abundant as the foam of the sea.

Wazifa for the Acceptance of Prayer

Hazrat ‘Ubādah ibn Sāmit (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Whoever, upon waking, recites the following:

and then says: O Allah, forgive meor makes any other supplication—it will be accepted. If he then performs wudu and prays, his prayer will also be accepted.

The Blessings of Saying Ameen

Hazrat Ibn Mas‘ud (RA) narrated:

I was offering prayer while the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, along with Abu Bakr (RA) and Umar (RA), was present. After finishing the prayer, I praised Allah, sent blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and began making personal supplications. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Ask, and you will be given! Ask, and you will be given!”

Abu Sabh al-Muqri narrated from Abi Zuhayr al-Namiri (RA):

One night, we went out with the Prophet ﷺ and passed by a man making du‘a with deep humility and sincerity. The Prophet ﷺ stood and listened to his prayer, then said: “His du‘a will certainly be accepted—if he ends it correctly.”

When asked what the correct ending was, the Prophet ﷺ replied: “With Ameen.”

The companion rushed to the man and advised him: “End your du‘a with Ameen—and rejoice!”

How to Make Du‘a

Hazrat Anas (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“When any of you makes du‘a, do not say: ‘O Allah, if You wish, have mercy on me.’ Rather, ask with certainty and determination. Do not say ‘if You wish,’ for no one can compel Allah.”

A Prophetic Remedy for Missed Daily Dhikr

Recite once:

Virtue: Reciting this once in the morning compensates for any shortfall in one’s regular dhikr routine.

According to a hadith in Musnad Ahmad, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Shall I tell you why Allah called Prophet Ibrahim (AS) His loyal friend (Khaleel)?”

“Because he would recite these words every morning and evening—up to ‘tuz’hirūn’.”

A Prophetic Formula for Becoming Mustajab ad-Da‘wat (Whose Duas Are Accepted)

Recite 25 or 27 times daily:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ

O Allah, forgive me, and all believing men and women, and all Muslim men and women.

Virtue:

As mentioned in hadith, whoever prays for the forgiveness of all believing men and women 25 or 27 times a day will be counted among those whose supplications are accepted, and through whose prayers provisions are granted to the people of the earth.

A Prophetic Formula to Open the Gates of Heaven

Recite once:

(Allah is the Greatest in abundance, all praise belongs to Allah in abundance, and glory be to Allah morning and evening.)

Virtue:

Imam Muslim narrated from Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (RA) that once, while praying with the Prophet ﷺ, a man recited these words. The Prophet ﷺ asked, “Who said these words?” A companion replied, “I did, O Messenger of Allah.”

The Prophet ﷺ said: “I was amazed by these words—the gates of the heavens were opened for them.”

Note:

These were the very first words to come from the blessed tongue of the Prophet ﷺ.

Protection from All Calamities

According to a narration in an-Nasa’i from Abu Hurairah (RA), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Whoever recites Subḥānallāh 100 times and Lā ilāha illallāh 100 times after Fajr prayer, his sins will be forgiven—even if they are as abundant as the foam of the sea.

In Sahih Muslim, Tirmidhi, and Nasa’i, Ka‘b ibn ‘Ujrah (RA) narrates from the Prophet ﷺ that whoever recites the following after every obligatory prayer will not be deprived:

  • Subḥānallāh – 33 times
  • Alḥamdulillāh – 33 times
  • Allāhu Akbar – 34 times

And whoever recites this dua three times in the morning and evening will remain protected from every calamity:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

In the Name of Allah, with Whose Name nothing on earth or in the sky can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Ten Powerful Phrases After Fajr Prayer

Imam Hakim Tirmidhi (رحمه الله) recorded in Nawādir al-Usūl, through Hazrat Buraidah (RA), that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Whoever recites the following ten phrases after Fajr prayer each morning will find Allah sufficient for all his needs and a perfect compensator.

These phrases are divided—five for worldly matters and five for matters of the Hereafter:

1. Ḥasbiya Allāhu li-dīnī – Allah is sufficient for my religion.

2. Ḥasbiya Allāhu limā ahammanī – Allah is sufficient for what worries me.

10. Ḥasbiya Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa ‘alayhi tawakkaltu wa ilayhi unīb – Allah is sufficient for me; there is no god but Him. In Him I trust, and to Him I turn in repentance.
