Signs of Black Magic in Islam

Magic may sound fascinating and powerful on the surface, but if we look at its origins, it is among the first causes of humanity’s moral downfall. A practitioner of magic connects with supernatural forces to achieve things they cannot do physically. This act involves the influence of evil powers and ultimately endangers both the individual and humanity at large.

As we know, when the soul was breathed into Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) and the angels were commanded to prostrate, Satan refused out of arrogance. He disobeyed Allah’s command, became accursed, and has since been determined to mislead humankind and distance them from Allah. One of his most dangerous tools is black magic, through which he harms the human mind, body, and soul.

What is Magic?

Magic is an invisible, mysterious, and supernatural act through which humans or jinn use specific words, gestures, objects, or rituals to produce unusual effects. It is often used to harm, control, or achieve certain goals.

Linguistic and Historical Background:

The word “Jadoo” is of Persian origin, meaning “astonishing” or “strange act.”

In Arabic, it is called Sihr (سِحر).

Qur’anic Reference: The Qur’an mentions Sihr in several places, such as:

“They did not teach anyone without saying: ‘We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve.’”

(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:102)

This refers to the story of Harut and Marut.

Ruling of Magic in Islam

In Islam, practicing, learning, seeking, or believing in magic is strictly forbidden and considered a major sin. The Qur’an clearly states that some people use magic to create division between humans, especially between spouses, serving evil purposes.

Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:102):

فَيَتَعَلَّمُوْنَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُوْنَ بِهٖ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهٖ ۚ وَمَا هُمْ بِضَآرِّيْنَ بِهٖ مِنْ اَحَدٍ اِلَّا بِاِذْنِ اللّٰهِ

“They learned from them what they used to cause separation between a man and his wife. But they could not harm anyone except by Allah’s permission.”

Through the story of Harut and Marut, Allah made it clear that magic is a trial (fitnah), and those who engage in it endanger their faith.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ included magic among the seven destructive sins, saying:

“اجتنبوا السبع الموبقات”

“Avoid the seven deadly sins.”

When asked what they were, he said:

“”الشرک باللہ، والسحر، وقتل النفس التی حرم اللہ إلا بالحق

“Associating partners with Allah, practicing magic, and killing a soul without just cause…”

(Sahih Bukhari & Muslim)

This hadith ranks magic right after shirk, showing its severity.

Therefore, every Muslim must completely avoid magic. If afflicted, one should seek only Islamic spiritual healing based on the Qur’an and Sunnah, and place full trust in Allah—not turn to magicians or false spiritualists, risking their faith.

Types of Magic

Throughout history, human nature has been driven by envy, revenge, greed for power, and the desire to control others. When these negative emotions intensify, some turn away from lawful means and resort to forbidden, satanic practices like magic. In various cultures, magic is used for different purposes—such as gaining love, harming enemies, blocking marriage or sustenance, or controlling jinn. Based on these motives, several types of magic have emerged, including:

Type of Magic (Signs of Black Magic in Islam)

Black Magic (Sifli Jadoo):

The most dangerous and forbidden form, involving evil spirits and jinn to cause physical, spiritual, or financial harm.

Love Magic:

Used to force someone into love, attachment, or marriage. Though it may seem harmless, it is also prohibited and spiritually harmful.

Blockage Magic:

Aimed at disrupting marriage, offspring, sustenance, or career, leading to constant failure and mental distress.

Jinn-Based Magic:

Performed by controlling jinn through rituals and pacts with devils—an act near to disbelief (kufr).

Evil Eye-Enhanced Magic:

While the evil eye is real, sometimes magic is used to intensify its effects, causing illness or destruction.

False Amulets (Batil Taweez):

Fraudulent practitioners give people un-Islamic, blasphemous amulets containing satanic symbols and names—another form of magic.

Difference Between Magic and Evil Eye

Many people confuse magic (sihr) and the evil eye (nazar), though they are distinct in nature, causes, effects, and treatment.

Magic (Sihr):

A deliberate, sinful act carried out by a practitioner using satanic rituals, incantations, or help from jinn to harm others.

Involves devils, jinn, and disbelief-based practices.

Can have long-lasting effects, sometimes passed down generations.

Strongly condemned in the Qur’an as “sihr.”

Evil Eye (Nazar):

A natural, unintentional effect caused by envy, amazement, or even careless glances.

May occur without the person realizing it.

Causes sudden symptoms like fever, fatigue, crying, or fainting.

The Qur’an refers to it in Surah Al-Qalam (68:51):

“Indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes…”

Treatment:

Evil eye is usually cured quickly with Qur’anic recitation, water from ablution, or Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Naas.

Magic, however, requires detailed spiritual treatment, patience, and the full process of ruqyah shar‘iyyah.

Difference Between Magic and Spirituality

Though both magic and spirituality relate to the unseen world, their nature, purpose, and paths are entirely different.

Difference Between Magic and Spirituality (Signs of Black Magic )

Magic is a satanic act where practitioners use jinn, devils, and blasphemous rituals to harm others, control them, or fulfill worldly desires. It relies on falsehood, evil, envy, and impure means, and is strictly forbidden in Islam—near to disbelief.

Spirituality, on the other hand, is a pure and divine path leading to closeness with Allah. It is attained through piety, worship, remembrance (dhikr), the Qur’an, sincerity, and devotion. Spiritual people—like saints and Sufis—seek Allah’s pleasure and their prayers and dhikr bring peace, light, and guidance to hearts.

Summary:

  • Magic is linked to devils; spirituality to the Merciful.
  • Magic is rooted in envy and harm; spirituality in love and goodness.
  • Magic weakens faith; spirituality strengthens it.
  • The magician is a friend of Shaytan; the spiritual person is a friend of Allah.

Misconceptions About Magic, Healers, and Amulets

In our society, many misconceptions about magic are widely believed, often exploited by fake spiritual healers, fortune-tellers, and money-seeking impostors.

The first common myth is that every problem or illness is caused by magic, while in reality, many issues are psychological, social, or physical—mistakenly attributed to magic.

Another misconception is that all taweez (amulets) are forms of shirk or black magic. In fact, some amulets containing Qur’anic verses or the Names of Allah (Asma al-Husna) are permissible—as long as they don’t include any words of disbelief or shirk.

Similarly, not every spiritual healer (aamil) is a magician. Some perform legitimate ruqyah shar‘iyyah based on Qur’an and Sunnah, sincerely seeking Allah’s help. Unfortunately, many impostors deceive people through lies, satanic rituals, and forbidden practices, exploiting people’s fears and endangering their faith.

Therefore, Muslims must approach such matters with knowledge, spiritual awareness, and proper Islamic guidance. Before acting, one should verify whether a practice aligns with Islamic principles. True protection lies in full trust in Allah, prayer, the Qur’an, remembrance (dhikr), and Prophetic supplications—not in hidden papers or secretive individuals.

Signs of Black Magic in Islam

While trials are part of life, suffering caused by black magic often appears in specific, unnatural ways. The following are key signs:

1. Unexplained Blockages:

Black magic can cause persistent obstacles—such as a student losing interest in studies, memory issues, chronic headaches, repeated business failures, or unexplained broken engagements. Natural challenges come and go, but magic-induced problems recur abnormally without clear cause.

2. Unusual Health Issues:

Magic can lead to physical and spiritual illnesses that don’t respond fully to medical treatment and often return after temporary relief. These may include:

  • Irregular menstruation
  • Male impotence
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Skin conditions, epilepsy
  • Pregnancy issues or birth defects

Such problems often target married life, causing strain or separation. Some researchers, including in Saudi Arabia, note that certain cancer patients may also be victims of black magic.

3. Psychological and Mental Disturbances:

Magic can affect the mind, leading to anxiety, paranoia, rage, or depression. Couples may begin to distrust one another, leading to conflict, distance, and even divorce. Victims may withdraw from work or social duties, and in extreme cases, experience hallucinations or madness.

This is hinted at in the Qur’an:

“…they learned from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife…” (Al-Baqarah: 102)

4. Disturbing Dreams:

Jinn and devils can disturb through dreams. Victims often experience repeated nightmares involving violence, death, sexual content, or threatening animals—especially if they never had such dreams before. These dreams lead to mental stress, fear, and sometimes sinful thoughts.

Cure of Magic

The only effective and lasting cure for black magic lies in sincere faith, divine help, the Qur’an, and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. The first step is consistent prayer, repentance (Istighfar), and complete trust in Allah. Specific Qur’anic verses—known as Ruqyah Shar’iyyah—are highly effective when recited, listened to, or used for spiritual healing:

  • Surah Al-Fatiha
  • Ayat al-Kursi
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Naas
  • Surah Yunus (81–82)
  • Surah Taha (69)

In addition, daily morning and evening supplications, frequent recitation of Salawat (Durood Sharif), and invoking Allah’s Names—especially Ya Shafi (The Healer), Ya Hafeez (The Protector), Ya Qahhar (The Subduer)—offer spiritual protection.

Before seeking help from any healer (‘Aamil’), it is essential to verify their beliefs, methods, and adherence to Shari’ah. Using magic to counter magic is forbidden and dangerous. A true spiritual healer relies solely on Qur’an and Sunnah, never involving jinns, idols, or un-Islamic practices.
