Introduction To Numerology:
When I began to reflect upon the world of numbers, I realized that these are not merely digits of counting, but doors to realities that open towards the secrets of the universe. Numbers are not only used in our daily lives, but they also manifest that wise system of creation of Allah which operates throughout the entire cosmos. When the heart gazes into the silence of the universe, a melody can be heard. Ibn ʿArabi (RA) says about the melody of numbers:
“Numbers are among the manifestations of the One Reality, which place everything in its proper position.”
(Al-Futūḥāt al-Makkiyyah)
This is the very consciousness that we find in the Qur’an, as it states:
“We created everything with due measure.”
And in another place, Allah, the Lord of Glory, says:
“He who created seven heavens in layers. You will see no inconsistency in the creation of the Most Merciful. So look again—do you see any rifts?”
These verses explain that the cosmic order is complete, perfectly arranged, and full of wisdom, whose depth can be comprehended through numbers.
In the view of the Sufis, a number is not merely a mathematical symbol but an echo of the Absolute Reality. From the number One to Tisʿatun wa Tisʿūn—that is, Ninety-Nine—each number reflects a luminous layer of the Divine Names. Numbers invite us on a journey towards the light of the inner realm. They take us beyond the outward layers of creation to the luminous center of Reality, where neither illusion remains nor the veil of selfhood. This is why the Sufis call the science of numbers a knowledge that “breaks the ego.” The numerical code of al-Raḥmān is 298, of al-Khabīr is 812, and of al-Wāḥid is 19. In Sufi interpretation, these represent the spiritual codes of the universe that guide a human being back towards his true servitude.
Where words, thoughts, and interpretations may sometimes conceal Reality, numbers tear through that veil and reveal it in a simple, radiant, and pure form. This is that very station where knowledge transforms into gnosis (maʿrifah), and servitude transforms into consciousness.
What is the Importance of Numbers?
The relation of numbers is with the essential mysteries of realities. They remove all the outward veils that cover a creature or a truth and present it through its original essence.
This means that when we try to understand any truth or creation in its most fundamental form—whether it be a molecule, an atom, or quantum—our understanding becomes more accurate, more transparent, and closer to reality. The more basic the expression (for example, the representation of the unit number), the greater the precision, truth, and gnosis that can be attained.
Whereas numbers with two or three digits actually represent several veils or layers that conceal reality.
The same arrangement is also witnessed in the world of science. Quantum physics tells us that every particle is energy, and that energy is bound within numerical proportions. Whether it is the periodic table of chemistry or the binary code system of digital technology, everything is established on the principle of numbers.
For example, the very elements from which human beings are made—Carbon (6), Hydrogen (1), Oxygen (8), and Nitrogen (7)—play a fundamental role. Each element has its own numerical identity, which manifests its properties. This proves that numbers are not merely a means of counting, but also a key that leads to the knowledge of reality.
In the Light of the Qur’an:
“He who created seven heavens in layers. You will see no inconsistency in the creation of the Most Merciful. So look again—do you see any rifts?”
(Sūrat al-Mulk 67:3–4)
These verses explain that the cosmic system is complete, perfectly arranged, and full of wisdom—whose depth can be understood through numbers.
The Superficial Classification of Creation:
Every creation can be described on different levels:
- Form — the outward body
- Elements of Form — the material elements
- Molecular Level — molecular composition
- Atomic Level — atomic structure
- Quantum Level — quantum reality
- Light Reality (Quark Level) — the luminous stage
For this very reason, all creations can be described more precisely through numerical codes.
Technology and the Wisdom of Numbers:
Another wondrous world of numbers is computer technology, whose very foundation lies upon numerical coding. This is a sign that Allah Almighty is showing us that:
“The highest form of coding system, in reality, is comprised of numbers.”
Because this system is connected with the knowledge of the angels.
Numbers: Removing the Veils of the Self
Numbers purify creation from the self, illusion, and vain imagination, and present it in its original form of servitude.
Letters form words, words form sentences, and sentences generate thoughts. Here the nafs (ego) finds it easy to interfere, because thoughts are mixed with imagination, interpretation, and selfhood. By contrast, numbers remove all superficial layers and guide towards the original reality.
The Spiritual Significance of Numbers
The spiritual meaning of numbers is a doorway that carries a human being beyond the subtle veil between material and immaterial realities. This knowledge not only helps us to understand the order and discipline of the universe but also shows the path of tearing through the veils of the self until one reaches the reality of servitude.
Numbers are those silent messages that speak without words. And every seeker of truth who understands their language enters into a world of cosmic wisdom, luminous balance, and spiritual insight—where gnosis (maʿrifah) manifests itself in the form of numbers.
This is the very station where man finds his true identity and the genuine destination of servitude.
