What is the reality of “effect”? How should we understand the effects of the evil eye, magic, and jinn? In this blog, discover the signs of negative influences and effective ways to protect yourself from them in the light of the Qur’an and Hadith.

The night had sunk deep into its silence. Moonlight was spread across the vast courtyard of the khanqah… In that stillness, a silent language was being spoken—one that only those can hear who have quieted the noise within themselves. Gentle breezes whispered through the leaves of the trees, as if the universe itself was eager to reveal a hidden secret. But not every heart is capable of understanding such a secret…
Breaking through that silence, a young man—Harith—approached the presence of a perfect dervish with heavy steps. His face showed exhaustion, his eyes reflected restlessness, and his heart was filled with a storm of questions.

He sat respectfully and said:
“Master… my life is falling apart. Peace has vanished, blessings are gone, my heart remains restless all the time… I don’t understand why all this is happening.”
The dervish looked at him with compassion, as if he had descended into the depths of his heart. Then he gently said:
“My son… you seek freedom from ‘negative effects’ without understanding ‘effect’ itself.”
Harith asked in surprise:
“Effect? Master, what does that mean?”
The First Lesson of Effect
The dervish picked up a small pebble and dropped it into a bowl filled with water. Ripples formed… spreading outward.
“This pebble is the cause… and these ripples are the effect. Every action in the universe creates ripples in the same way.”
Then pointing towards the Qur’an, the dervish recited:
فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ،
وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ
(Surah Az-Zalzalah 99:7–8)
Translation:
“Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will also see it.”
“Do you see, my son? Nothing is ever wasted… everything leaves an effect. Whatever a person does in life is being recorded somewhere—whether he feels it or not.”
At this point, the conversation shifted. The question was no longer ‘what is happening?’ but ‘why is it happening?’
The Heart: The True Center of Effects

The dervish placed his hand on Harith’s chest:
“The deepest effects are upon the heart…”
The conversation paused here, as if the real discussion was about to begin.
Then he narrated a Hadith:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When a servant commits a sin, a black dot is placed upon his heart…”
(Tirmidhi)
“And when he repents, that dot is erased. But if the sins continue, the heart becomes completely dark.”
The dervish said:
“These are the very negative affects you are feeling. They are not forming outside… they are being created within.”
Tears filled Harith’s eyes…
A Shared Principle of Spirituality and Science

The dervish said:
“This is not just the talk of Sufis—this is the Divine law that operates in every system.”
Then he recited another verse of the Qur’an:
إِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتّٰى يُغَيِّرُوا مَا بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ
(Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:11)
Translation:
“Indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves.”
“This means change does not come from outside. The effect is formed within first, and then it appears outwardly.”
Society: A Reflection of Collective Effects
“When one person lies, the effect is small.
But when an entire nation makes lying a norm, truth itself dies.”
Then the dervish said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When evil becomes widespread among people and it is not stopped, punishment may descend from Allah.”
(Ibn Majah)
“These are collective negative effects that lead nations toward decline.”
Do Negative Effects Really Exist? Between Reality and Misconception

Harith asked the question that most people carry in their hearts—do the evil eye, magic, or jinn truly have effects?
The answer was neither outright denial nor exaggerated confirmation.
It was explained that the evil eye is mentioned in Hadith, and it is real. However, attributing every problem to the evil eye or magic is like running away from the real issue.
Magic is mentioned in the Qur’an, but it is limited—it is not an unstoppable force. Similarly, jinn are mentioned, but it is not correct to search for their influence in every matter.
The core message was this: a person must learn to distinguish between reality and illusion.
Harith then asked:
“How are negative effects formed?”
“My son… negative effects do not appear suddenly. They are built silently.
A slip of the gaze…
A lie…
A hurt caused to someone’s heart…
And then a person wonders why darkness fills his life—while he himself has been gathering that darkness.”
At this stage, Harith’s perspective began to change. He started looking within rather than focusing on external influences.
Signs of Negative Effects: Reality or Misdiagnosis?
When the signs were discussed, the tone remained cautious. It was not claimed that every form of restlessness is a negative effect. Rather, it was explained that certain states may make a person reflect—such as unexplained anxiety, heaviness in the home environment, or repeated obstacles in work.
However, it was also made clear that these conditions may arise from mental stress or an unhealthy lifestyle. Therefore, one should not rush to conclusions.
The Path of Light: The Sufi Cure
The dervish placed a bowl of clear water before him:
“Just as muddy water is purified by clean water, the heart is purified through good deeds.”
Then he recited:
أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ
(Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:28)
Translation:
“Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace.”
“Therefore…”
Adopt truth → the heart will illuminate
Do good → the effect will be purified
Remember Allah → the soul will come alive
The Correct Way of Spiritual Protection: Based on Qur’an and Action

When the solution was discussed, the tone became simple yet firm.
It was said that if the Qur’an is recited in the home—especially Surah Al-Baqarah—its effect is محسوس (noticeable). Hadith also clarifies that Shaytan does not remain in such a home.
Similarly, reciting the four Quls daily and specific verses at night was mentioned. But these were not presented as “instant fixes,” rather as a continuous relationship.
Prayer (Salah) was declared as the foundation. Because when the foundation is strong, everything else begins to fall into place.
At the end of the conversation, no long sermon was given. Only one simple truth was stated:
Effect is always present—it is a system. But a person has the choice of what kind of effect he creates in his life.
After hearing this, Harith asked no further questions. Perhaps he had found his answer—or at least his direction.
The moonlight was the same, the atmosphere unchanged… but the one who was observing had transformed.
