What is the Evil Eye? — In the Light of the Quran and Hadith

The Evil Eye (Nazar-e-Bad) refers to that spiritual effect which falls upon a person, object or animal from the envious, jealous or admiring gaze of someone, causing harm to them. This is not superstition, but a reality proven by the Holy Quran and multiple authentic hadith.

وَإِن يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ

“And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes.”

Surah Al-Qalam: 51

Allama Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Those who deny the Evil Eye are denying the Quran and authentic ahadith — this is the utmost ignorance.”

وَلَوْ كَانَ شَيْءٌ سَابَقَ الْقَدَرَ لَسَبَقَتْهُ الْعَيْنُ، وَإِذَا اسْتُغْسِلْتُمْ فَاغْسِلُوا

“The Evil Eye is real and true. If anything could outrun Qadr (divine decree), the Evil Eye would outrun it.”

Sahih Muslim: 2188

Note: The one who casts the Evil Eye need not necessarily be an enemy — sometimes even someone who praises with love, if they forget to say ‘Masha’Allah,’ can cast the Evil Eye. Even a person can cast the Evil Eye upon themselves.

Complete Signs of the Evil Eye — Physical, Mental, and Spiritual

The signs of the Evil Eye manifest in three ways: physical, mental/psychological and spiritual. Let us understand each aspect in detail.

Physical Signs of the Evil Eye

Signs of the Evil Eye (Nazar-e-Bad)
Physical Signs of Evil Eye (Nazar-e-Bad)

Repeated Headaches

Persistent heaviness or pain in the head — that does not quickly heal even with medication.

Sudden Exhaustion and Lethargy

Feeling severe exhaustion without any exertion — as if all energy has been drained from the body.

Disturbed Sleep

Not being able to sleep at night, or sleeping too much — and still not feeling refreshed in the morning.

Loss of Appetite and Hunger

Sudden loss of desire to eat, discomfort in the stomach — without any apparent illness.

Burning Eyes

Unexplained burning in the eyes, heaviness or blurred vision.

Fever or Physical Pain

Pain or fever in the body that tests reveal no cause for, and does not decrease with medication.

Mental and Psychological Signs of the Evil Eye

  • Sadness, despair and feeling like crying for no reason
  • Not feeling interested in any task — even favourite activities feel unpleasant
  • Recurring bad thoughts and whispers (waswasah)
  • Constant feeling of fear and restlessness
  • Weakened memory — forgetting things
  • Becoming angry and irritable over small matters
  • Preferring solitude — withdrawing from people

Spiritual Signs of the Evil Eye

  • Not feeling focused in prayers — laziness in worship
  • Not feeling like reciting the Quran, or feeling restless while reciting
  • Lack of connection with the remembrance of Allah (dhikr)
  • Strange dreams — frightening or disturbing dreams
  • Atmosphere of restlessness and unease in the home

Important Note: These signs can also occur in other illnesses. First get a medical examination — if no medical cause is found and the signs began suddenly after someone looked at you, then consider the Evil Eye.

Specific Signs of the Evil Eye in Children

Children are most susceptible to the Evil Eye because they are innocent, beautiful and vulnerable — and people admire them without thinking when they see them. The Prophet ﷺ himself performed ruqyah on Hazrat Imam Hasan and Imam Husain (R.A.) against the Evil Eye — which is the greatest proof of this.

  • Continuous crying for no reason — especially at night
  • Refusing to breastfeed or eat — sudden loss of appetite
  • Rapid breathing or panting without any illness
  • Blank stare or a faint-like condition
  • Loss of cheerfulness and happiness — a child who was always playing becomes silent
  • Vomiting immediately after going to a new environment
  • Fever for which tests reveal no cause

“I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature and from every evil eye.”

Sahih al-Bukhari: 3371 — The Prophet’s ruqyah for Hazrat Imam Hasan and Husain (R.A.)

For Parents: Before and after taking the child to any large gathering or event, recite this du’a and blow it over them. Minimize the child’s exposure in front of those from whom there is fear of casting the Evil Eye.

Signs of the Evil Eye on Business and Home

The Evil Eye does not only affect people — it also affects homes, businesses and animals. Events of camels being struck by the Evil Eye are also mentioned in the ahadith.

Signs of the Evil Eye on Business

  • A business that was running well suddenly comes to a standstill
  • Obstacles and losses in every task — unable to progress despite efforts
  • Customers come but do not purchase
  • Unjustified arguments and conflicts among employees
  • Immediate loss after someone’s praise or envious gaze

Signs of the Evil Eye on the Home

  • Constant atmosphere of restlessness and tension in the home
  • Problems starting after visitors come
  • Household items breaking or getting damaged repeatedly
  • All members of the household — children and adults — falling ill at the same time
  • Sudden difficulties after a new home or new vehicle

Who is Most Susceptible to the Evil Eye?

In the light of ahadith and the opinions of scholars, the Evil Eye most commonly affects the following people, things and circumstances:

  • Beautiful and healthy children — because people admire them without thinking when they see them
  • During occasions of new happiness or success — new vehicle, new home, new job
  • A person who displays their blessings — showing physical beauty, wealth or skill
  • Those in close proximity to envious people — those who harbour envy in their hearts
  • When ‘Masha’Allah’ is not said — the one offering praise forgets to say it
  • Animals and crops — beautiful camels, cows and lush crops

Clarifying a Misconception: The Evil Eye has no relation to the colour of the eyes — as it is commonly believed that ‘a person with blue eyes casts the Evil Eye.’ This is not proven by ahadith. The Evil Eye is related to the spiritual condition of the observer’s heart and their abandonment of the remembrance of Allah.

Sunnah Methods of Protection from the Evil Eye

The Prophet ﷺ taught such practices for protection from the Evil Eye that are both easy and very effective. These are preventive measures — to be adopted before the Evil Eye is cast.

(1) Reciting the Two Protective Surahs Morning & Evening   Recite Surah Al-Falaq, Surah An-Nas and Surah Al-Ikhlas three times each, and pass your hands over your entire body — this is the easiest and most powerful protection.(2) Cultivating the Habit of Saying ‘Masha’Allah’   Whenever you see something good — whether yours or someone else’s — immediately say ‘Masha’Allah.’ This acts as a barrier against the evil eye.
(3) Daily Recitation of Ayatul Kursi   Reciting Ayatul Kursi every morning and evening protects against every calamity — this is the command of the Prophet ﷺ. Read our detailed blog.(4) Keeping Your Blessings Private   Do not display every good thing in front of everyone. Hazrat Uthman (R.A.) also advised: conceal your blessings.
(5) Daily Ruqyah on Children   The du’a of the Prophet ﷺ: ‘U’eethukuma bi kalimaatillaahi’t-taammati…’ — blow this over children daily, especially before they sleep.(6) Reliance (Tawakkul) on Allah   The greatest means of protection is complete reliance on Allah. Keep firm conviction in your heart that benefit and harm belong solely to Allah.

Q: Do children get the Evil Eye more?

Q: Are envy (hasad) and the Evil Eye the same thing?

No. Envy is an evil emotion of the heart, while the Evil Eye is an effect of the eye. Sometimes the Evil Eye can even be cast without envy — for example, someone admires while praising but does not say ‘Masha’Allah.’

Q: Do people with blue eyes cast the Evil Eye more?

There is no specification of any particular colour in the hadith. The Evil Eye is not related to eye colour, but rather to the spiritual condition of the observer’s heart and their abandonment of the remembrance of Allah. This is merely a common misconception.

Conclusion — Do Not Fear the Evil Eye; Be Cautious and Keep Complete Trust in Allah

The Evil Eye is a reality proven by the Quran and hadith — but becoming consumed by fear of it is not necessary. A Muslim who keeps complete reliance upon Allah, maintains the Sunnah adhkar morning and evening, and makes the Quran their companion — they remain protected from every calamity.
